 ABOUT THE ARTISTS

A warm, radiant performer with a broad repertoire ranging from Irving Berlin to    the French chansons of Edith Piaf and The Life and Music of Oscar Hammerstein II, Daphne Alderson paints a rich palette infused with life adventures in a show that is intimate, funny and often bittersweet.  Her performances are intimate cabaret shows, where she performs her songs with patter (stories and conversations with the audience).  Her collaborator, John Marcinizyn, is a unique guitarist and, together, their shows flow easily and lovingly.

Daphne made her celebrated New York cabaret debut performing her show:  “Songs & Chansons”.  Since then, she has toured throughout the Northeastern Region in cabaret and classical venues. Ms. Alderson was a featured artist at the Center for American Music and the International Poetry Forum in Pittsburgh. She has recorded American and French song standards for public broadcast on WQED-FM Pittsburgh, and performed at the prestigious Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center in Connecticut.   Ted Sohier, at WQED-FM in Pittsburgh called her voice “enchanting & mesmerizing”.

As Artists in Residence, Ms. Alderson and Mr. Marcinizyn toured Central and Latin Americas and the Caribbean Islands for the University of Virginia Seminar at Sea.   As a concert artist, she has performed in New York at Avery Fisher Hall and Merkin Hall, The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. and various arts organizations and churches throughout        the United States, Canada, and Italy. She has toured with Chatham Baroque and    performed at the Bach Aria Festival in Stonybrook, New York.

Her opera credits include Central City, Pittsburgh Opera, Opera North, Berks Grand Opera and the Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh, among others. Her roles include Hansel, Purcell’s Sorcoress, Nicklausse, Isabella, Rosina, Orfeo, Lucretia, Suzuki, and Maddalena, as well as various Handelian roles.

Composer, guitarist, banjoist, John Marcinizyn performs frequently as a  soloist, with the Ferla-Marcinizyn Guitar Duo, flautist Tom Godfrey, contralto Daphne Alderson, and groups ranging from The Bach Choir of Pittsburgh to his jazz trio Acoustic Swing. His versatility as an acoustic and electric guitarist allows him to perform in many styles including classical, jazz, rock, blues, and folk. John has also performed guitar and banjo for many theater companies including Quantum Theater (Where he wrote and performed a flamenco score for The Red Shoes and a Blues score for El Paso Blue),.  His playing can be heard on six CDs and one DVD. John’s original music compositions have received numerous performances and include a guitar concerto, string quartet, orchestral music, music for theater, and pieces for solo guitar and guitar with mixed ensemble, as well as a number of jazz and rock pieces.  His Sonata for Guitar and Marimba received critical acclaim following its premiere at the Guitar Foundation of America International Festival and Competition held in Buffalo.  The Westmoreland Symphonic Winds commissioned a piece, Song for the Sparrows (in memory of Beth Ann Johnson and Elyse Jeanne Saraceni who were killed in the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103) that premiered to acclaim at Seton Hill University.  John holds a Ph.D. in music composition and theory from the University of Pittsburgh, and teaches guitar at Carnegie Mellon University and guitar and composition at Seton Hill.

Douglas Levine stays busy in his hometown of Pittsburgh as a pianist, composer, arranger, music director and teacher.  His original scores for theater and dance include: Eastburn Avenue, Mother Courage and Peer Gynt (Playhouse REP,) Losing It (Raymond Lane Memorial One-Acts,) Stuff (Gateway to the Arts,) Deadend (Attack Theatre,) Mimoun (Pennsylvania Dance Theatre,) Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice and The Shaughraun (Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre,) Colorfast (Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater Festival) and Shakespeare Street (Playhouse Junior.) He has written music or arrangements for companies including Pittsburgh Public Theatre, City Theatre, Dreams of Hope, Pitt Repertory Theatre, Renaissance City Women’s Choir and Pittsburgh Musical Theater. In 2005 he released Kromatica, his debut recording of original piano compositions and arrangements. This Spring, Doug will be the arranger/musical director for Beautiful Dreamers, a world premiere co-production of Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre and The Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh.

As a specialist in drum set, Al Wrublesky serves as Lecturer in Percussion at West Virginia University. He has performed with such artists as Ben Vereen, Lena Horne, Al Martino, The Temptations, Maureen McGovern, Gladys Knight and the Pips, as well as such jazz artists as Randy Purcell, Joe Negri, John Wilson, Danny Cohn, Joe Dallas, and Bobby Negri.  Mr. Wrublesky received his degrees from West Virginia University and has extensive commercial recordings for several local Pittsburgh businesses. His performance experience includes the Pittsburgh Opera and Ballet Orchestras as well as serving as the principal percussionist with the Civic Light Opera Orchestra in Pittsburgh.

Brian Stahurski (String Bass/Electric Bass,) received his formal education at Duquesne University, earning a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance in1989 while studying with Jeffrey Mangone, and a Master's degree in Performance in 1992 while studying with Anthony Bianco. Since then he has performed with the Pittsburgh Ballet Orchestra, Major Broadway touring
productions, the Wheeling Symphony, WQED's “Live from Studio A” and various jazz,
blues, pop and rock artists around Pittsburgh. Brian recently accompanied jazz trumpet
legend Maynard Ferguson and his Big Bop Nouveau Band around the world for two years
playing jazz festivals, clubs and universities in the United States, Europe, and Asia. In that
time he also performed on two recordings; vocalist Michael Feinstein on “Big City
Rhythms” with Maynard Ferguson, and with renowned vocalist Diane Schuur on “Swingin'
for Schuur”, also featuring Mr. Ferguson. Both albums are on the Concord Jazz Label. He is
currently Adjunct Professor of Bass Guitar at Duquesne University.
